PC Tools is known for their Windows-based security and PC utility software, but they also have a Mac security software. PC Tools iAntiVirus is a Mac-specific security software designed to keep your Apple computer protected from viruses and other threats. The Mac antivirus software is capable of detecting and removing native Mac malware and threats that—while not nearly as common as Windows malware—do exist and can pose security threats.

Unfortunately, iAntiVirus doesn’t stack up to the best Mac antivirus software. The security solution isn’t nearly as comprehensive as the competition. So while it is capable, it just isn’t compelling.

Let’s get this out of the way: unlike the best Mac antivirus software, iAntiVirus only detects and defends from Mac-specific threats. This proves to be one of the greatest strengths of the software, yet also a noticeable weakness. On the one hand, excluding threats that only infect Windows computers makes the signature databases much smaller and the scans significantly quicker.

Unfortunately, the lack of protection from Windows malware can also be seen as an oversight. While your Mac may be immune to PC viruses, it doesn’t mean it can’t pass them on. One of the main reasons for installing Mac antivirus software (particularly for business users) is to prevent malware from being spread to PCs, and iAntiVirus simply isn’t equipped for that.

While not as all-encompassing as other OS X antivirus software for Macs, iAntiVirus is effective at what it does. The Mac antivirus software uses real-time scanning on any file as it is accessed. This real-time protection is available by using PC Tools’ IntelliGuard technology. The Mac security software even includes heuristic technology to analyze file behavior and detect unknown threats.

The various scans are versatile, allowing you the flexibility of choosing what to scan, balancing protection and speed. For thorough protection on both ends of the spectrum, iAntiVirus is equipped to scan both running processes, and compressed archive files.

Any threats found by the OS X antivirus software in real-time or on-demand scans are immediately placed in the secure quarantine. This safeguarded area lets you store the files without any risk while you decide what to do. If a legitimate file was detected erroneously (known as a false positive), then you can restore the file. If the detected item is indeed a threat, you can securely remove it directly from the quarantine.

PC Tools iAntiVirus is pretty easy to use, partly because there isn’t as much too the Mac antivirus software. The interface is a bit dull, but certainly usable. Navigation is direct, and the included tools are easy to access and use.

One area where we struggled was performing updates. In our short time with the Mac antivirus software we were unable to successfully update it. Hopefully it was just a fluke, as updates are crucial when it comes to antivirus software.

PC Tools hosts product-specific support online, and includes a searchable knowledgebase with FAQs and other helpful resources. There is also a dedicated iAntiVirus community forum. Paid customers can also take advantage of personalized assistance via email, telephone or online live chat.

Summary:

PC Tools iAntiVirus is a decent choice for Mac antivirus software, but ultimately ends up being inferior to the best antivirus for Mac. The most notable difference that is both the greatest selling point and main deal breaker (depending on your needs) is that the software only detects Mac viruses - particularly interesting when you consider that they have “PC” in the company name.
