avast! has made a name for themselves in the security world with free antivirus software that is both powerful and easy to use. And while avast! Mac Edition is a decent Mac antivirus software, it struggles in the areas that make their free antivirus so compelling. avast! Mac Edition isn’t nearly as feature-filled, powerful or usable.
Still, there are several redeeming qualities of the Mac antivirus software. While Macs and OS X have traditionally not been targeted by hackers and viruses, they aren’t immune. The Mac edition of avast! antivirus is well equipped to protect your Mac from both threats specifically targeting OS X and Windows viruses that could be passed on to others. avast! Mac Edition is compatible with PowerPC and Intel-based Macs. And if you have Windows installed on your Mac, avast! has a special Mac+PC Edition available for dual protection.
While they are traditionally just called computer viruses, threats come in many forms. Luckily, avast! Mac Edition is able to defend your computer from the risks regardless of their type (or even which OS they target). From viruses to worms, Trojan horses, spyware and more, this Mac antivirus software has you covered from all malware.
One area that some Mac security solutions miss is threats spread through email. avast! features an integrated email scanner to stop malware in your inbox before it has the chance to wreak havoc.
This Mac antivirus software is fully capable of protecting your computer from threats. Utilizing both on-access scans (as files are opened) and on-demand scans (manual), you are always protected. The Mac security application uses the same solid scanning engine as its Windows counterpart.
avast! Mac Edition keeps you protected with automatic updates and always-on protection. When run in Persistent Mode, avast! antivirus for Mac launches at startup and keeps running. The thorough scans can even delve into compressed files to uncover hidden threats in your archives.
avast! Mac Edition is pretty flexible, with customizable tools and features to give more control over how the Mac antivirus software works. You can specify exactly which files to scan, and set them to be the default scan. You can also flag specific files to be excluded from a scan, if you know they aren’t infected. The main interface lets you quickly perform the default scan, or specify a specific volume or folder to scan.
The virus chest serves as the secure quarantine where detected risks are placed so they can’t infect the system. One unique feature of the virus chest is that you not only have the options to restore or remove the file, but you can also try to repair the file if it is a good file that has just been infected.
avast! Mac Edition is a good option for protecting your Mac, but not the best Mac antivirus software. There are a few unique features and the level of security is up to par, but the software falls a bit short in actual execution.
avast! Mac Edition has a unique user interface and an effective antivirus scanner.
Unfortunately, some features are a bit confusing and didn’t seem to work as intended.
avast! Mac Edition is fine antivirus software for Mac, but not outstanding.
